Size Guidelines for Twitter Header Photo

The main image people see across the screen when they visit your Twitter page is called the header. Twitter recommends your pic for the header be 1500 x 500 pixels, but a 3000 x 1000px image will look a lot better on a computer monitor of any significant size. If you do use a smaller pic, be sure to save it at the highest dots per square inch you can.

The height of your cover photo will be contained within the top and bottom bars of the platform’s design. This is about 46 pixels high up top and 59 pixels on the bottom. Keep this in mind as you choose or create an image.

Something else to think about is how the layout will look. Your profile picture will be overlaid onto your header picture, extending about 120 pixels. So make sure your design doesn’t include text or graphics that will get cut off in that spot.

Size Guidelines for Twitter Profile Picture

The profile pic or avatar should be no smaller than 400 x 400 pixels. It needs to be square, but you can crop during upload. Be sure to max out dots per inch here, too. Your profile pic appears at different scales. It’s 200 x 200 on the profile page, but goes to about 210 pixels square with the default white border padding. This image gets smaller in timelines, and blows up when someone clicks on it. Make sure you choose a pic that looks good in all the relevant sizes.

Bye-Bye Background Image

The background image is no longer seen by other users on Twitter. Only you will see it from now on. Only put a background image up if it interests you, as no one else will ever see it.
