Marketing is harder than ever today. That might sound counterintuitive, but think about all the amazing technological advances made in just the last twenty years. How we communicate and access information is faster than ever, and this lightning fast pace has changed how the average consumer interacts with marketing.

The average attention span hovers at around seven seconds. That’s about the same as your average goldfish. That means unless you’re really drawing them in with something meaningful and interesting, your viewers are clicking away in mere seconds.

So unless you want your internet marketing strategies to become irrelevant and ineffective in the blink of an eye, you better start taking your game to the next level. Here are some ideas.

1.) Be Multi-Platform-

The marketing frontier used to be print, radio, and television. While that’s not faded away, it’s no longer enough to get your message across.

Millennials don’t read newspapers or listen to radio the way their parents do. They’re the biggest and fastest growing consumer group out there, and are here to stay, so your marketing better be able to reach where they’re at.

Millennials are doing everything on the internet from participating in their communities to buying their deodorant. That means you need to have a significant presence on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, Pinterest, pretty much every social media platform available.

You also have to be up to speed with new emerging platforms. You’ve got to get your message out on these social media outlets where your customers are spending their time. And you have to get good at it. You can’t phone in your social media strategies. It takes time, effort, and an understanding of the platform to make it a success.

2.) Marketing Takes More Than Fancy Tools-

No matter how beautiful your pics are, no matter how well directed your videos are, it takes a lot more than beauty to effectively get your message across. You can have all the flash you want, but if your core message is ineffective, it’s going to fail to reach your audience.

Marketers are creative by nature. They can’t allow their creativity to be eclipsed by innovation in technology. Of course you want a modern and attractive presentation of your ideas, but your content cannot be neglected or replaced. Find ways to get your meaningful message across in modern outlets without sacrificing your content.

3.) It’s Got To Be About Emotion-

Repetition in marketing is dead. Gone are the days of pounding a message home by playing it over and over again. Your message must be an experience for your audience. It must connect with them on some level emotionally or they’re just not going to be interested at all.

What’s worse, they are not going to hitting the share and like buttons. Your message has to be meaningful and valuable enough that people want their friends and families to benefit from hearing it, too.

4.) Enlist Your Customers-

Today’s consumers want to be involved in marketing the products and companies they believe in. Whether they are sharing videos, participating in polls, or providing input about design and what comes next, your customers want to be involved.

The fastest and most proven way to get them to help spread the word is to engage them and make them feel like they are part of a community. Once you accomplish that, you can count them to help do some of your marketing for you. Word of mouth is priceless, especially when it’s on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Make sharing your customers’ original content a priority of your social media marketing strategy.
