You no doubt spend a lot of time pouring over the analytics of your company’s social media. How else are you really going to know what’s working and what’s not? But have you ever considered how useful it might be to research your competitors’ social media strategies as well?

Not only does it give you a look at the exact audience you are trying to target, but it gives you an idea about what kinds of posts that audience is engaging with. This by no means you should run out and start copying every move your competition makes.

Far from it. It just means you can look at what’s working for others in your industry, why it’s working, and what you can do to get the same kind of positive results.

Look at some of the Facebook pages of your industry’s top performers. How many likes do they have? What are they spending most of their time on? What are they posting about? Do they post once a day? Twice a day? How are they engaging with their followers?

You may find they run a lot of polls and contests for exclusive discounts or content. Do they feature a lot of user generated content? And if so, what kind of response does it get? Look at what makes your competition’s’ Facebook page unique and how they capitalize on their brand.

Figure out how to do the same with what makes your brand one of a kind. Figure out your Facebook voice and develop and nurture it carefully.

The same applies to Twitter. Companies with thousands of followers have not necessarily achieved social media promised land. How many users are they following? How often are they retweeted?

Is their Twitter simply mirrored from Facebook or is it unique? How do they make use of images and graphics? Are their hashtags trending? Do they have an engaged following?

Instagram is the perfect outlet for companies trying build emotional connections with their followers. See how some of the top performers are reaching out to their followers.

Are their photos centered on the product? Do they show the product as it fits into the user’s lifestyle? How many likes do they have? Followers? Which kind of photos get the best response? Can your company incorporate similar ideas to use Instagram effectively?

Find what works for your company. Instagram is not universal in its results. What works for one product or company might not be right for another. You just have to figure out how it works best for you.

How are companies in your industry utilizing YouTube? Are videos mainly tutorials? Do they address submitted questions? Are your competitors using YouTube to post videos showing employees on the job? Are they giving followers an inside look at their operations?

Do they show the staff having wacky fun times on the production floor? What kind of videos are getting the most likes? These are all very effective ways to build relationships with YouTube. Many companies are getting great results by skipping the ads and product placements and instead just being helpful to their followers.

YouTube has proven invaluable for direct communication with followers.

Remember, there’s nothing wrong with spending a little of your work day observing your competition’s social media accounts. It never hurts to take a step back and look around for some inspiration. You might find something that gives you your next big idea.

Exploring the post and videos on social media in your industry is really the best way to know what’s going on with your target audience. So dig in and do the research. It will be worth your time.
