When it comes to social media marketing strategies, a blog is a great way for your brand and company to reach out to your customers and potential customers. A well written blog lets you build long lasting, meaningful relationships in way that platforms like Facebook and Twitter simply can’t.

Blogging brings a bit of soul and a human touch to your social media marketing. You can bet that your followers on Facebook and Twitter are also reading your blog. Blogs drive traffic if you keep it focused on your customers and followers and don’t make it all about advertising. Do your blog right and it will pay dividends in exposure, searches, and driven traffic. Here are a few ideas.

Content Spectrum- It’s a good idea to mix it up a bit. No one wants to read the same kind of post over and over again. So write from different perspectives as pertaining to your followers. Some of your followers have purchased your product or service and some haven’t. Write to appeal to both demographics.

Don’t make assumptions based strictly on your own experiences. Keep it diverse by thinking of the different strata of the buying cycle involving your brand. One follower may have used your product loyally for years, while another may have been thinking about buying for the last six months. You have to appeal to both.

Interact- It’s called social media for a reason. Be social. If your followers (or anyone for that matter), comments on your blog, respond in a timely fashion. Not doing so is simply rude.

Unless you’re some kind of internet mega-sensation, you have time for this. If you don’t, get help so you can. It’s also a good strategy to encourage follower participation with some of the old standbys. Calls to action in the form of surveys/polls, contests, giveaways, and just asking your followers what they want are always effective.

Start A Conversation- Sometimes, just starting a conversation with your followers is enough to get many of them involved. Encourage them to join you in long term exchanges. Don’t be afraid to talk about difficult subject matter. Your followers want to discuss the good and bad.

Perhaps one of your followers has contributed something noteworthy. Give them a shout out and call them by name. It’s a great way to show your followers you genuinely care about their input and that they are putting in the time to follow you.

Images- While your blog is not necessarily as image driven as other social media like Facebook, or obviously Pinterest, it is important to remember that enormous blocks of text can be killers. Don’t hesitate to use relevant imagery on your blog. We’re a visual species. Take advantage by drawing in your followers with some eye candy. Just don’t get ridiculous. Don’t let the images replace your other content.

Experts/Guest Bloggers- It’s a great sign for your followers if they see an industry heavyweight taking the time for you to interview them or write a guest blog for your brand. It helps to establish your brand and company as an expert authority in your field. It is also just great content to have someone exciting on your blog. Remember, at the end of the day, it’s all about your content.

Lists- Lists seem to be the new way to grab and keep a follower’s attention. A list lets a reader quickly peruse your post from start to finish and determine if it’s worth their time and attention. Lists and bullet points make it easy for them by giving them easily digestible bites of your content. Make them want to read your content with interesting and eye catching lists.

Relevance- Providing your followers something valuable with your blog is key. Educating and entertaining are great ways to do just that. But another way is to go topical by writing about current events in your particular industry and field.

  • Is there anything in the news?
  • Has anyone in your industry made a great breakthrough?
  • Has anything gone awry that your followers could learn from?

Just as valuable as being an expert in your field is being a source of current events about it. Become that source and your followers will look to you for the headlines.

Try applying these ideas to your blog. You’ll be happy with the results.
