How To Optimize Your Google+ Local Business Page

Google+ is a social media platform some people have been slow to embrace, but if you have a business or brand that you are trying to promote, you can’t really afford to ignore the benefits of Google+.

This is especially important when you are trying to optimize your local business page.

During the summer of 2012, Google places became Google+ Local. Brands and businesses with Google places pages were transitioned to Google+ Local at that time. The point of Google+ Local (according to Google) is to help users discover and share places.

As a business owner, you can create a page (aka place) that people can share and review. Your Google+ Local business page is also a landing spot for people who are searching within Google Maps and Google+ Local searches.

In order to achieve a desirable organic rank as well as a good ranking with the Google+ Local SERP, it’s important to consider several different factors.

1. Be Thorough –

Can’t state this enough.

It’s important to fill out ALL the information for your Google+ Local listing. Make sure your listing is 100% complete.

Research shows that Google assigns a greater value to complete listings so this will help your page rank higher.

2. Accuracy Matters –

This one is pretty simple, but very important: make sure your listing is completely correct. Your name, address and phone number should be accurate as well as consistent on all listing sites across the web.

3. Reviews are a Good Thing –

Google values third party non-biased reviews and displays them on your Google+ Local listing. The more good reviews you have = the higher you will rank.

Encourage your happy customers to leave reviews. Just don’t leave fake reviews or try to tell customers what to say in their reviews. This will get you in trouble with Google in a hurry!

4. Pictures & Videos –

Evidence exists that show there to be a correlation between the number of images on a listing and its ranking. This is why you need to use lots of images.

Include videos as well. Videos are engaging and share more about your business or brand with your audience.

5. No Shady Practices –

Spamming or keyword stuffing is pretty obvious. Use keywords that are relevant, but don’t try to beat the system. Google will figure it out and you’ll be penalized.

Keep things above boards and it will pay off in the long run as you experience organic traffic and search ranking.

6. Keep the Content Coming –

Fresh content has value on Google+ just as it does within Google’s regular search engine rankings. The more frequently you update your listing, the more Google loves you. .

Make sure to add new content at least every few weeks.

7. Don’t Put all Your Eggs in One Basket –

There are other sites that will list your business besides Google+ Local. Share your information with these as well.

Just make sure to keep your info consistent so that it matches what you have in your Google+ Local listing.
